Neutrinos may not be faster than light after all :(
CERN's claim that neutrinos might travel faster than the speed of light has had its first hard hit. ScienceInsider along with Opera researches have both claimed that a loose fiber optic cable was the fault that warped CERN's data. This loose fiber optic cable affected the atomic clocks that measured the neutrinos speeds. If this claim is true then this whole theory will be relegated and dismissed. Still, I have faith that the speed of light is just a mental idea. I just don't feel like the universe can have a speed limit. Then again I could be wrong. However there are a couple instances were the speed of light is surpassed. Quantum entanglement and the Universe's inflation are both known to pass the speed of light. So in a way the speed of light has already been surpassed, however it hasn't been broken with objects that have mass. Only time will determine this theory's fate. I would personally like this theory to be true. You know, just to know Einstein was wrong lol :)

Interesting post, Raul. It's crazy to think about how may things physicists need to take into account when analyzing data. Looking forward to more posts in the future :)

ReplyDeleteWhile there is nothing that proves that the speed of light is a limit, there is a hundred years' worth of evidence that suggests so. Nothing in science can ever be "proven" outright; it can only be supported. Ever since Einstein formulated the idea as a speed limit for all object in the universe and developed his theories based off of this postulate, nothing has been found to significantly alter this framework.
On another note, I hope that nothing is ever found to exceed the speed of light. Because if particles can travel faster than the speed of light, then travel back in time is possible, which will wreak havoc on all events of cause and effect. The universe would be in total and utter chaos.
I agree with what Sky said, if time travel were possible then unspeakable horrors would emerge. I can only imagine that time-travel would be exploited by those with both good and bad intentions. I also think that it must be frustrating for the scientists who created the claim of the neutrinos because of how a simple error among the research apparatus caused their entire theory to become discredited. It's as if their entire work was for naught and that they were falsely led to believe that they had actually achieved a monumental discovery.
