Morals: What are morals?

Today in psychology we talked about the princeples of morals. What exactly are morals? To many morals are the rules they live by to feel like a good person. But the true definition of a moral is a rule that determines right from wrong. Many people around the world look towards their religion for morals but one can't always accept every moral thrown at them. Your the one who has morals, your opinion on what is right or wrong differs from others. So how do we know wether we are moral or not? In all honesty sometimes we don't know, but sometimes its obvious. An example of a simple moral is wether it is moral to kill someone for no reason. Of course its immoral. But now lets flip the scenerio. Is the death penalty moral? Some will say yes and others no. Its all based on your personal belief of whats right or wrong.

We might not be able to tell wether certain morals are better than others, but what we can tell is that there are different levels of morality.

Level 1: If punishment is involved with the decision then it is the wrong choice.
Level 2: If a reward is given for choosing a certain choice, then it is right. No reward; then its not the right choice.
Level 3: You follow the rules (morals) in order to look like a good person.
Level 4: You follow the rules because you agree with them.
Level 5: You have your own rules that you follow. You don't need pre-existing rules to follow, you already have your own. You follow rules in order to improve yourself internally.
Level 6: You follow universal morals. You are the definition of being morally right. Examples of these type of people are of the highest quality, not human to be exact. People like Jesus and Buhdda.

Levels 1 and 2 are moral levels which are below what's morally expected of you. Levels 3 and 4 are levels expected to be present in everyone. Levels 5 and 6 are well above the morality expected. (This level of morality is almost impossible to find.)

So what morality do you think you are? And be honest. Leave a comment below, and like always thank you for reading :)

Need Some Motivation in Science

Well since last year I have been obsessed with physics. Every little thing in my life I viewed as a physics problem. Example: (Me listening to music)
Me: Hmmm. If a sound wave travels at 230 m/s and the wave length is 20 cm. What's the frequency?
Haha. I know Im weird but I thought about this and many other things that I learned in my first year in physics. Be it refraction, diffraction, electromagnetism, gravity, ect.....
I loved (still do) and was obsessed with physics. I wanted to be a theoretical physicist and explore the laws of the universe. Fill my curiosity and learn how the world around me works. But lately I've been having doubts about physics. What's the point? What if I do find a theory that will unlock some secrets of the universe? Its not the money part I care about. Could care less about that. Its just that those laws/theories seem pointless. Why work my whole life to figure something out and then die having the possibility that these laws might not apply to the afterlife (if it even exists). I would have wasted my whole life on something that meant nothing. Yes, it might help others after my death, but at the expense of me not enjoying my life to the fullest. Why should other people hang out with friends and have a good time while Im going to spend every second of my life working on physics? I guess Im exaggerating that I will work every second of my life and not hangout with friends but the reality is I won't have much time to do much if I do purse being a physicist. Its not that I don't believe that I can't make it. I have a pretty optimistic view on everything and believe anything is possible to some extent. Its just that I feel that I will be wasting my time. I would rather meet new people. Maybe travel around the world. Meet new people, see their way of life and their culture, and just overall having fun with life. I guess Im just a kid right now and want my life to be all fun, but who doesn't? I just want to live my life to the fullest. I guess many of you won't really care about what I think, and maybe even think Im kinda dum for thinking this (cough cough sky cough). But it kinda hurts that my dream of being a scientist was crushed by a simple thought :(

I used to have a good idea of what my future was but now I have no idea and its scary to be honest. I might travel the world, become a DJ (hahahah lol XD), or maybe even just be a beach bum. If anyone has advice comment below. Thanks for reading :)

Religion

Me being a scientific guy, I don't really see the faith in religion. Yes its possible god exists but wheres the proof? I constantly ask my parents on it and they just say that there is no other explanation. I find that to be very close minded and ignorant point of view.

Why is it that this idea of a higher being that created everything has existed for so long, however no evidence has ever been shown? I can only hypothesis to why it is. For the idea of an all loving, merciful, forgiving, and ever lasting deity does sound nice. Knowing that he will always be with you no matter what you have done, in what state you are, or how you feel. He is always their to lend a helping hand. This along with being promised a place in heaven (prompted you are good) is undeniably unresistable. Still it all seems flawed to me. Why would this god who is all loving send you to hell just because you have sinned? I thought he was all forgiving and merciful!!! He is said to be perfect yet he constantly needs you to pray for him. I thought you were perfect Mr.God. I know I might sound like Im bashing religion, but how else do you expect progress if the cracks in the idea aren't pointed out. As learned in our first day of english class, one becomes more educated and less ignorant when you take other opinions to mind. Like any other religion, they only believe in their practices/beliefs and go against the rest. This in its self shows how close-minded people have really gotten.

If you guys want to try and argue from your point of view just message me below in the comment area.

Our Generation's Supernova, Planet with two Suns, and the Speed of Light Broken?

1. Since my last post, science has had many exciting discoveries. First I will talk about the new supernova found. To all you astronomy beginners a supernova is when a massive star has burned through its light elements like hydrogen, helium, carbon ect... Eventually the star burns all its light elements and gets to the iron core. This massive star then has one of many outcomes outcomes. Be it a very dense and relatively dead neutron star, a supernova, or maybe even a black hole if it's a super massive star. In this case we are talking about a supernova which is when a star collapses from its own gravitational force and explodes. These explosions are very violent for it hurls tones of deadly radiation and energy. These events don't happen that often and as a result, they become one of those very rare and beautiful events that one luckily gets to see once or twice in his lifetime. This particular supernova was found by our bay areas own UC Berkeley. It was found moments after the explosion happened, which is not to say that we saw the event unfold as soon as it happened. Remember that it takes time for light to get to us, and in this unimaginable vast universe that we live in, it doesn't help that its vastness is so huge that it keeps us from getting a glimpse at such a majestic event. So when I speak that we found it moments after, Im referring that the light from the explosion finally hit our earth and allowed us to see it. It is likely that the light traveling from the supernovas region in space took millions of light years to get to us. A distance so incredibly huge, that even light, the fastest known thing in the universe (not for long though). Going at around 300,000,000 meters per second, took millions of years to get here. To get a picture of how big these distances are, multiply the speed of light by all the seconds in millions of years, and your left with a monster size number with which no human being has the capability to grasp. A number along the lines of around  9.3312*10^21*Number of Millions of years it took light to get to our planet=X meters. This ladies and gentleman, is only a distance applied to things near us. These numbers get bigger and bigger the more you go out into space. Now that you a pretty good idea of how special these events are, here is a picture of the supernova. Which is located in the pinwheel galaxy, which is conveniently located right next to the big dipper.

-Of course this event that I described so in-depth looks dull in the picture, but the beauty of it is knowing what exactly that faint spec of light in the picture is, and how it got to you. Something that I find incredibly amusing and keeps me up at night wondering how mysterious and yet attractive the world around us is.

If you would like to learn more about this event or about supernovas, go to the links below.

-The video below is an episode in the history channel's beautiful series "The Universe". It talks about a star's life.

2. The second story I will talk about is something relalitivly new and therefore I don't have much information on it. All I can say is that astronomers have found a planet that orbits two stars!!! These stars are much smaller than our sun and must have a very complicated orbit for this solar system is the only solar system known through out the universe to have a planet orbiting two stars.

3. Now the final story is one of the most, if not, the most important event in our lifetime. It has to do with the speed of light being potentially broken. The speed of light, according to Einstein's "Special Theory of Relativity", is the speed limit of the universe (3*10^8 meters per second). Nothing can go faster than it, or at least thats what Einstein thought. However, recently a group of physicists in Italy, more notably known as the scientist at CERN. Have found that a sub-atomic particle called neutrinos have been found to arrive at a certain part of a particle accelerator 60 nanoseconds quicker than light. This might be such a miniscule difference to you that you could just dismiss it, but no matter how small the difference is, it goes quicker than the speed of light and that is monumental. Monumental you ask? Your probably asking yourself "Why should I care wether something goes quicker than the speed of light?".  Because wether you like it or not, we must learn how the world around us works in order to help the human species advance as a whole. Also, because people like me love finding out new things about the universe around us. Its an addiction that we can't help but feed. Now if this turns out to be true (which it looks like it will) all of physics, astronomy, and many other sciences will have to change their laws and rules. This could potentially prove some part of string/M-theory (theories that try to explain everything in one single theory) which says that there are alternative universes. It could also mean that time travel is possible and that in the future we could possibly travel back in time. This discovery would ultimately change the way we view the universe for ever.

This is truly a remarkable and exciting story which I hope is true. I hope that you at least found something interesting in this very long blog entry, and I hope that one day, you too can see and find the beauty and mystery in this great place we call the universe :)

Introduction: First Post!!!

Hello my fellow homeboys/bloggers lol. My name is Raul Fernandez and this is my blog, which will mostly consist of information on anything science related. Be it Physics (My favorite subject), Chemistry, Psychology, or any other science, I will always have something interesting to show you. If you are interested on where I get my information, here are some sites I use: Bigthink.com, Yahoo.com, and Sciencedaily.com.

Enough with this intro. Today on yahoo I found a pretty crazy story. Astronomers may have found a planet which they believe is largely made of Diamonds!!!!!!  It's around four times larger than the earth and orbits a Pulsar every two hours and 10 minutes. A Pulsar is essentially a dead neutron star that rotates hundreds of times per second.

If you want to learn more about pulsars/quasars in terms that anybody can understand, see the video in this link. Its a very cool documentary part of a series called "The Universe".
